Sayama City Museum is showing an exhibition of Shoji Ikehara’s folktale illustrations and travel sketchbooks through December 6. The exhibition opened on October 17, and the city’s October 23 announcement details admission, workshops and a related picture-book release. The museum is at 1-23-1 Inariyama in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture.

The artist joined Toei’s animation studio in 1963 and later worked on directing, drawing and art for a television series of Japanese folktales from 1982. That animation background helps explain the exhibition’s link between moving-image storytelling, regional oral traditions and illustrated landscapes. Original picture-book art and sketches made while travelling are among the announced exhibits.

Admission costs 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for high-school and university students; younger visitors through junior-high-school age enter free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with final admission at 4:30 p.m. The museum closes on Mondays unless the Monday is a public holiday.

Weekend and holiday craft sessions have separate fees of 300 to 960 yen and use same-day numbered tickets. A new illustrated folktale book is already on advance sale locally at 1,980 yen including tax, ahead of wider sales on November 1. Workshop participation and book purchases are separate from exhibition admission.
